Use our free solar cost calculator to estimate solar installation costs for your home. Compare system sizes, battery storage options, monthly electricity savings, and simple payback before planning your budget.
Illustrative component shares of the project estimate.
Solar-only model allocates 40% panels, 15% inverter, 10% mounting, 20% labor and 15% other costs. Battery cost is added separately. These are sample allocations, not actual contractor line-item quotes.
Planning tool only. Country cost rates, currency conversion and solar generation are illustrative. This calculator excludes incentives, financing, maintenance, replacements, taxes and utility export arrangements. Compare actual installed quotes and electricity bills before making financial decisions.
Estimate your solar project budget in three simple steps.
STEP 01
Select your solar system capacity in kilowatts (kW) and choose your country. The calculator uses an example installed cost per watt for each market. You can also adjust the currency conversion rate.
STEP 02
Choose whether to include battery storage and select its capacity. For a more useful savings estimate, enter your expected monthly solar production and the value of electricity in your local currency.
STEP 03
Check the estimated installation cost, cost per watt, monthly savings, and simple payback. Review the cost breakdown to understand your budget before requesting quotes from local solar installers.
Understand what your solar cost estimate includes and how each result helps with planning.
Shows the estimated upfront cost of your solar system, including the selected battery allowance. The calculation uses example market rates and excludes incentives, financing, and other unmodeled expenses.
Shows your estimated project cost divided by the solar array’s rated capacity in watts. Adding battery storage increases this value without changing your solar panel capacity.
Estimates potential monthly bill savings using your solar production and electricity value. Actual savings depend on household consumption, utility tariffs, self-consumption, and export compensation.
Shows how many years it could take for modeled electricity savings to equal your upfront investment. It excludes financing, maintenance, equipment replacement, and incentives.
Shows the electricity your solar panels may generate each month, measured in kilowatt-hours (kWh). The estimate uses your selected system capacity and monthly energy yield. Real solar production depends on sunlight, panel orientation, shading, temperature, and system efficiency. Use a location-specific production estimate for better accuracy when comparing solar costs and potential electricity savings.
Solar installation cost depends on system capacity, equipment, labor, location, and optional battery storage. This calculator uses example prices per installed watt to estimate your project budget.
Solar Cost Formula
Solar Installation Cost = System Size (kW) × 1,000 × Installed Price per Watt
Total Project Cost = Solar Installation Cost + Optional Battery Cost
Battery cost in this model is calculated at an illustrative US$400 per kWh.
Practical Example
A 5 kW solar system using the calculator’s example US rate of $2.50 per watt:
5 × 1,000 × $2.50 = $12,500
Adding a 10 kWh battery:
10 × $400 = $4,000
Estimated total: $16,500 before incentives.
At the default production estimate of 600 kWh per month and an electricity value of $0.15/kWh, modeled savings are $90 per month.
These are calculator assumptions, not verified local installation prices or guaranteed savings.
Solar System Size: A larger photovoltaic system generally needs more panels and mounting equipment. Its total cost rises with capacity, although actual installed prices per watt may vary by project size.
Equipment Selection: Solar panels, inverters, battery storage, and mounting hardware affect equipment costs. Product efficiency, warranties, and compatibility can also influence the final price.
Installation Requirements: Roof condition, electrical upgrades, labor, permits, and mounting complexity can change solar installation costs. Ask installers to identify what is included in their quotes.
Location and Incentives: Local labor rates, equipment availability, taxes, and utility requirements affect solar pricing. Eligible incentives may reduce costs, but this calculator does not deduct them automatically.

The calculator’s breakdown uses example allocations: 40% panels, 15% inverter, 10% mounting, 20% labor, and 15% other costs. Battery storage is added separately. Actual contractor quotes may differ.
Answers to common questions about residential solar costs, equipment pricing, and budgeting considerations.
Solar installation costs depend on system size, location, and equipment. For example, this calculator estimates $12,500 for a 5 kW US system using its illustrative $2.50/W rate. Get local quotes for actual pricing.
System capacity, panel quality, inverter selection, roof conditions, labor, and installation requirements all affect your project price. Comparing complete installed quotes is more useful than comparing individual panel prices.
At the calculator’s example US price of $2.50 per watt, a 5 kW installation costs approximately $12,500 before incentives. This is a planning assumption, not a current nationwide average.
Yes. Enable battery storage to estimate the extra cost of a 5–20 kWh battery bank. The calculator uses an illustrative $400/kWh allowance. Additional battery-related installation costs may not be fully covered.
It divides estimated project cost by modeled annual electricity savings. You can adjust monthly production and electricity value. The result is a simple payback estimate, not a full financial return calculation.
No. Costs are shown before incentives. Available programs and eligibility vary by location and date. Check current rules and compare qualified installer quotes before calculating your final out-of-pocket cost.
It provides preliminary estimates using example prices and your selected assumptions. Actual solar panel installation costs depend on your property and local market. For guidance on comparing installers, see the U.S. Department of Energy’s solar installer guide.

Important: This calculator provides illustrative planning estimates. Prices and exchange rates are not live. Savings assume each modeled kWh has the entered electricity value. Actual bills, export rates, incentives, taxes, financing, and maintenance may change the financial outcome. Confirm costs with qualified local installers.
